Oracle Buys Endeca; Targeting Unstructured Data (Updated)

This article is more than 10 years old.

Oracle this morning announced a deal to acquire Endeca Technologies, a privately held Cambridge, Mass. company that provides unstructured data management, Web commerce and business intelligence software. Oracle says that Endeca provides "powerful and highly intuitive products that help companies analyze unstructured data, gain better business intelligence, and deliver a superior customer experience."

Terms were not disclosed. The deal is expected to close before the end of 2011.

Endeca reportedly had raised about $70 million in venture capital; in July it said revenues were running at about $150 million a year.

Update: Nomura analyst Rick Sherlund estimates that Oracle is likely paying 5-6x sales, which would be $750 million to $900 million. "We view this as a good purchase for Oracle as it gives them a product to manage ‘unstructured’ data," he writes in a research note. "Overall, we like the acquisition and think it fits well with Oracle’s existing portfolio."
