Majority Doesn't Care Whether Boss Is Male or Female

This article is more than 10 years old.

It's not all Devil Wears Prada out there in the workplace. A recent study showed that "fewer and fewer Americans care whether the boss is a man or a woman.

A 1953 Gallup poll showed that 25% of participants had no preference for a male or female boss; by 1983, the number had risen to 36%, and by 2006, it was at 43%.

A recent online survey of more than 60,000 people by Kim M. Elsesser of UCLA and Janet Lever of California State University shows that the proportion having no preference now stands at 54%.

This is good news for all of us since those cultures that empower women "tend to move away from the glorification of violence and are less likely to breed dangerous subcultures of rootless young men." Pinker's Better Angels.

As the culture's respect for the authority of women continues to increase and our numbers are added to global governing institutions and peace-seeking institutes and initiatives, we can truly hope that Mr. Pinker's "long peace" will continue to extend itself into the future.

As our Secretary of State Hillary Clinton recently announced, a new program has been instituted that

calls for federal agencies to coordinate their efforts while working in conflict zones and to create institutional support for the inclusion of women in prevention programs, peacemaking and nation building.

"Women are not just victims of war they are agents of peace," said Clinton to a packed room in Gaston Hall on the Georgetown University campus.

At the end of any long day, especially one in which the GOP continues to gather itself together in a circular firing squad, that's really good news.

Because, frankly, this old litigator gets tired of all the fussing.
