Is It Socially Acceptable To Wear Google Glass To A Bar?

Following
This article is more than 10 years old.

I remember when it wasn't socially acceptable to use a credit card at Starbucks (true story, I used to get strange looks every time I made the line wait to buy a cup of coffee, now it's an every day thing).

The lesson here is anything new will be derided. You're asking people to change their behaviors. They are afraid of being face detected. They are afraid of what these things will be able to do (and because no one has really shown off yet what they do that fear is at least partially justified).

We are going to have to come up with new social rules.

Did you know that Google Glass can take photos or videos of you and you can't tell when the user is recording? This is true, I verified it with several Google employees.

So, if someone walks into a bar with these on, I'll assume I'm being recorded.

Imagine if someone walks into a bar with a cell phone up and recording every conversation. That person will soon be asked to change their behavior or leave.

I'll be one of the heaviest users of Google Glass in the world. I'm excited by getting them. But there are times and places where I expect that I'll be asked to take them off. There will be times I ask other people to take their wearable computers and recording devices off too.

A new social contract is needed now that these are arriving.

That said, soon I'll be directed to the best bars by the Google Glass and if the bartender doesn't like me wearing them, I'll change the review so that people get guided to go somewhere else!

So, if you are a bartender, you better watch out. Those of us who will be wearing Google Glass are often influencers, rich, and willing to change OUR behavior when it comes to spending our money, time, attention. Hint: I tip well and drink a lot of expensive Scotch (although I'm trying to cut down, which the Glass will help me with too).
