Apple/Samsung 101% Of Q4 Handset Profits; 103% For 2012

This article is more than 10 years old.

It's Apple and Samsung, and a whole lot of money losing pretenders.

That's basically what the mobile phone market looks like right now.

In the fourth quarter, according Canaccord Genuity analyst T. Michael Walkley, Apple and Samsung combined to generate 101% of industry profits; for all of 2012, the total was 103%, reflecting the full year operating losses by BlackBerry, Nokia and Motorola Mobility. (LG and HTC both were in the black in 2012, I would note.)

While the Street has lately become nervous about Apple's competitive position, note that Apple in the fourth quarter generated mobile device operating income of $12.265 billion, which was 72% of the operating income generated by the 8 largest players. For all of 2012, Apple's $35.903 billion in operating income from mobile devices accounted for 69% of the industry total.

Samsung was 29% of the total for the quarter, and 34% of industry operating profits for the year.
