This article is more than 9 years old.

It may have been unattainable for the Rolling Stones, but employees across the country are getting serious professional satisfaction at some of the nation's top companies.

To determine the Best Cities For Employee Satisfaction, Forbes consulted the second annual Employment Satisfaction Report Card by City generated by salary comparison site Glassdoor. The report drew on population data from the U.S. Office of Management & Budget, as well as 700 plus reviews per metropolitan area shared by employees in the 50 largest U.S. metros on Glassdoor over the past 12 months.

The San Francisco Bay Area leads the ranking for the second year in a row, with San Jose grabbing the top spot and San Francisco proper holding onto number two.

Not surprisingly, the tech sector dominates employment in this region, with Google and eBay among the companies with the most satisfied employees in San Jose and Twitter , Riverbed Technology , and Genentech keeping folks fulfilled in San Francisco.

Washington, D.C. took the third highest score for employee satisfaction, with professionals reporting the greatest levels of gratification at American University, George Mason University, and the National Institute of Health (NIH).

Number four Norfolk, Virginia employees reported high levels of satisfaction with the U.S. Air Force as well as the U.S. Navy, while further down the list, workers in Oklahoma City had high marks for the University of Oklahoma, Oklahoma State, and Chesapeake Energy.

San Jose, Washington, D.C., and San Francisco occupied another top three (though in slightly rearranged order) as the cities ranked top for compensation and benefits. Employees in San Jose, San Francisco, and Norfolk, meanwhile, voted those cities tops for career opportunities.

Finally, in Salt Lake City, Jacksonville, and San Francisco, roughly half of employees surveyed for the report expected business to improve in the coming six months, lending those cities the highest confidence improving ratings of any across the country.
