Ten-Year-Old Offers FLOTUS Her Unemployed Father's Resume

This article is more than 9 years old.

Ten-year old Charlotte Bell surprised her parents, the media, and even First Lady Michelle Obama on Thursday when she stepped forward and handed FLOTUS a copy of her father's resume during a q-and-a at the White House celebration of Take Our Daughters and Sons to Work Day.

According to the Associated Press, when called upon to ask a question at the East Room event, Bell stated that her father had been unemployed for three years, and stepped forward to hand Mrs. Obama his resume. The first lady annually answers questions from the children of executive branch employees.

"My dad's been out of a job for three years and I wanted to give you his resume," said Bell.

A mildly startled Mrs. Obama recovered quickly, offering Bell a hug and explaining to the crowd, "It's a little private, but she's doing something for her dad."

Bell's father was an Obama presidential campaign worker in 2012 and has been seeking a policy-oriented job for several years, recently directing his search at the White House.

From the Associated Press:

"Charlotte's family had joked over the weekend about making a job pitch to the first lady, but her parents didn't know she would give it a try, according to her mother, an executive branch employee who did not want to be identified."

Mrs. Obama reportedly took Mr. Bell's resume with her when leaving the event.
