Adelson Gives $5M to GOP Congressional PAC

Casino mogul Sheldon Adelson, whose family had already contributed more than $15 million to the super PAC supporting Newt Gingrich's presidential bid, has given an additional $5 million to a PAC supporting Republican congressional candidates.

A filing with the Federal Election Commission on Sunday showed that Adelson and his wife, Miriam, each gave $2.5 million in February to the Congressional Leadership Fund.

The couple's support made up the overwhelming majority of the total raised by the fund in the first quarter. Among other donors was the Koch Industries Inc. PAC, controlled by Charles and David Koch, which gave $5,000.

The super PAC, headed by Sen. Norm Coleman (R-MN), aims to preserve and expand the GOP majority in the House. It has not yet begun serious spending on congressional races.

The Gingrich super PAC, Winning Our Future, had not yet filed its quarterly report by midday Monday. (The deadline for quarterly reports is April 15.)

Any recent donations from Adelson would come as a surprise. Adelson told The Jewish Journal in late March that Gingrich had reached "the end of his line."
