Hearthstone Hits 20 Million Players, Shuffles Toward Mobile

In a scant six months Hearthstone's player base has doubled, jumping from 10 to 20 million players around the globe.

The free-to-play collectible card game reached its first 10 million in less than a month, according to Activision-Blizzard (ATVI.)

Launching in March and reaching 20 million registered players by September is no small achievement, especially in a year dominated by the PS4 and Xbox One rivalry and big, splashy games like Titanfall and Destiny.

Blizzard's foray into freemium has been a huge success on iPad as well. The game launched in the App Store in April and Blizzard says to look for the game to show up on mobile and Android in the "not so distant future."

The Curse of Naxxramas, the game's first single-player expansion, launched in July.

Activision Blizzard reported $481 million in digital online revenue for the financial quarter ending June 30th this year, up from $383 million during the same period in 2013. Much of that revenue was generated in Hearthstone, according to the publisher.

The first Hearthstone World Championship plays out this November, where gamers will compete for a prize pool of $250,000, with $100,000 going to the first place winner.

That's not too shabby for a new release, though it's a paltry sum compared to the $5 million and change Dota 2 champion NewBee won this year.

Either way, Blizzard's latest release and first free-to-play title is on the rise and shows no signs of slowing down. That speaks to its quality as a game and its implementation of free-to-play, which has been largely viewed as positive.
