Taylor Swift's 'Shake It Off' Debuts At No. 1

This article is more than 9 years old.

Taylor Swift’s surprise new single “Shake It Off” has officially debuted at number one, to the surprise of very few in the industry.

The ode to ignoring the haters sold 544,000 copies in it’s first week of availability. The track is Swift’s second number one hit, after 2012’s “We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together”. Both songs debuted at number one, which speaks to the demand for new Taylor Swift music. “Shake” is also only the 22nd song to ever begin it’s run in the penthouse. To put that in perspective, there have been over 1,000 songs that made it to number one, so it is in truly rare company.

In addition, the lead single from her upcoming 1989 album now holds the title for biggest sales week for a track so far this year. “Shake” is the only song this year to debut with over 500,000 copies sold, earning it a gold certification immediately. Right behind her on the list of biggest single-week sales is former number one “Happy” by Pharell and Ariana Grande’s “Problem (ft. Iggy Azalea)”, both of which sold over 400,000.

While it may be at the top of the list for most sales in one week for 2014, it ranks fourth when that list is opened to other year. In front of “Shake” is Flo Rida’s “Right Round” with 636,000, Taylor’s previous smash “We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together” with 623,000, and Katy Perry’s “Roar”, which sold 557,000 in one week this time last year.

While 544,000 copies sold in one week is certainly impressive, so are her other charting placements. The track is already performing extremely well on radio in most formats and online, sitting somewhere in the top ten on both the Streaming and various radio charts. When the song first arrived, Clear Channel’s pop-leaning stations all spun the song once an hour, which have helped it rocket up the radio charts, something that typically takes longer than on sales or streaming-based rankings. On the streaming side of things, the much-talked about clip on YouTube has already amassed almost 50 million views in less than ten days.

The song was released last Monday, immediately after the singer announced and premiered it during a livestream on Yahoo . While the world was waiting for some kind of announcement from the now ex-country singer about new material, nobody anticipated an entire campaign kick off all at once.

The upbeat anthem is Swift’s 60th Hot 100-charting song, an astonishing accomplishment for a woman so young. Those 60 were collected in less than ten years, with her first single “Tim McGraw” finding its footing in 2006. Taylor is now second when it comes to women with the greatest number of songs on the tally in their careers, right behind Aretha Franklin.
