Patrick Dempsey Buys McDreamy Micro-Compound

This article is more than 9 years old.

Kesha’s not the only celebrity who has found a new home in Venice, CA. Patrick Dempsey, the actor known best as “McDreamy” for his long-standing role as Dr. Derek Shepherd on “Grey’s Anatomy,” has just added a “micro-compound” near Venice Beach to his real estate holdings.

Part of the compound, a bungalow, was originally built in 1952 but renovated in the 2000s by Touraine Richmond Architects. At the same time, a three-story separate-but-attached dwelling was added on. The addition takes up much of the space on the small lot — save a few small outdoor areas and porches. Dempsey paid $1.925 million for the property.

The recent architecture features juxtaposed panels of corrugated metal, polycarbonate and glass. Inside, the home is cozy and welcoming with everything you could want on a livable, small scale. The 3-bedroom, 3-bathroom home is three floors and 2,288 square feet. The master suite on the third floor has its own 300 foot terrace.

Utilitarian and yet unusual with the combination of new and old, it is no surprise the property appealed to Dempsey’s aesthetics. He and his family live in their main residence, a stunning and light-filled Frank Gehry Malibu home, that is also covered in corrugated metal, earning it the nickname “The Tin House.”

The famous architect built the house at the beginning of his career and it was recently profiled in Architectural Digest. Dempsey and his family keep chickens and miniature donkeys underfoot on the property and enjoy time in a vintage Airstream trailer in the backyard as well as cooking in their outdoor brick oven.

Both homes share a similar and unique style, quite a different look compared to former costar Katherine Heigl’s home in Los Feliz. The actress sold her colonial home for $2,615,500 last year.
