Tony Hawk-Backed Skateboarding Web Site Launches

Tony Hawk, who brought skateboarding into the mainstream as a teen-ager, is now behind the launch of a new web site that debuted last week dedicated to the sport. TheRideChannel.com will not only showcase breath-taking videos but also a daily stream of editorial content detailing the history and legends of the sport.

“This hasn’t really been done in the past. It’s the best hub for all skate content,” Hawk said. Being billed as an extension of Hawk’s popular Ride Channel on YouTube, the site will include the latest from Andrew Reynolds, Ishod Wair, Cory Kennedy, Grant Taylor, Dennis Busenitz, Stevie Williams and Chris Cole among others. Powered by Complex Media, which runs a number of lifestyle sites targeting young males, the site’s editorial team will offer news, tips and tricks, and how-to and video coverage.

Hawk, now 46, thinks it’s the right time for the site. “Skating’s in a good place – it’s more popular than Little League. Parents now encourage it which shows you how far we’ve come,” Hawk explained. “It’s also really exploded on the international level in places like Cambodia, Afghanistan, China, South Africa, Uganda and Ethiopia.”

Here’s a video of Hawk executing the first 900 at the X Games:
