Mega-retailer Wal-Mart is dropping the price on it’s 5c model iPhone to a mere $.97 with a contract, according to spokespeople people for the company.

CNet is reporting that at as of 9 am this morning, Walmart will charge $.97 for it’s budget 5c and $79 for it’s sturdier and flashier counterpart 5S. Prices were previously set at $29 and $99, respectively. Experts are reading the price drop as a move to free up shelf space for the iPhone 6, which is rumored to be set for release in early September.

The 5c was unveiled at a September 2013 media event at Apple headquarters in Cupertino, California. It’s bright colors and lower price point were thought to be a move to woo the teen and international markets. The phone, along with the 5S, sold nine million units in it’s first three days of availability alone, prompting Apple CEO Tim Cook to refer to the launch as the companies’s “best iPhone launch yet.”

Moreso than any other Apple product, the highly-anticipated iPhone 6 has been the subject of endless rumor and debate. Forbes contributor Anthony Leather provides a good distillation of the internet rumor mill here, highlighting the possible larger screen, better battery life, and upgraded operating system.

The iPhone 6 could be released as early as September 9th, according to reports.
