5 Facts About Cutthroat, Deal-Seeking Black Friday Shoppers

Following
This article is more than 9 years old.

Given that 55% of Americans plan to skip Black Friday, who exactly is enduring the long lines and crowds to pounce on deals?

From RetailMeNot’s 2013 survey, it seems deal-seekers, Millennials and parents are the most excited about it.

Sixty percent of shoppers said that scoring great deals is their favorite part of Black Friday. And three-quarters of respondents 18 to 34 are excited for it, and 70% of parents look forward to it as well.

In contrast, 64% of respondents over age 60 are dreading the mass shopping day, as are half of non-parents.

In general, as a newer set of stats from a RetailMeNot survey earlier this month show, Black Friday shoppers are a rabid, consumption-embracing bunch:

1. Significant percentages of pre-Black Friday shoppers confess to shopping on a full stomach (46%), on very little sleep (36%), or  under the influence of alcohol (12%).

2. About one in five (21%) shoppers report that they have never missed Black Friday.

3. Sixteen percent of in-store Black Friday shoppers would be willing to leave family and friends to ensure they get to the Black Friday deals,  and nearly one in ten admit they’d break the speed limit (8%) or cut the line (8%) to get into a store earlier.

4. A majority of Black Friday shoppers (93%) are willing to wake up early on Black Friday to shop, with half of these consumers planning to arrive earlier than 6 am.

5. Close to one in five (18%) Black Friday shoppers would not step away from a great Black Friday sale no matter how long the line was. On average, these consumers are willing to wait in line two-and-a-half hours for a great Black Friday sale, but 13% would pay for someone to stand in line for them.
