Gartner Forecasts Tablet Shipments Will Overtake PCs In 2015

Forecasting 2.4 billion traditional PCs, tablets, ultramobile and mobile phone unit shipments in 2014 and tablet unit shipments overtaking PCs in 2015, Gartner recently released their Worldwide Traditional PC, Tablet, Ultramobile and Mobile Phone Shipments to Grow 4.2 Percent in 2014.

Key take-aways from their forecast include the following:

  • The worldwide PC market will shrink from 317.6M units in 2013 to 316.6M units in 2015.  Gartner expects demand for PCs globally to drop significantly from 2013 to 2014, down to 308.4M unit shipments in 2014 then rebound in 2015.
  • Ultramobiles and premium PCs will grow from 21.5M unit shipments in 2013 to 55M in 2015, attaining a 36.76% compound annual growth rate (CAGR).
  • Tablet worldwide shipments will grow from 206.8M units in 2013 to 320.9M units in 2015, attaining a 15.78% CAGR in the forecast period.  Tablet worldwide unit shipments in 2015 will reach 320M, surpassing the entire PC market unit shipment forecast of 316.6M units.
  • Mobile phone worldwide shipments will grow from 1.8B in 2013 to 1.94B in 2015, attaining a 2.51% CAGR in the forecast period. The following table provides a comparison of forecasts by device type.

  • Gartner is forecasting that Google ’s Android operating system will be the fastest growing in the worldwide traditional PC, tablet, ultramobile and mobile phone market on a unit shipment basis.  Android-based devices worldwide shipments in 2013 were 898.9M devices, increasing to 1.37B in 2015, attaining a CAGR of 15.10%.  The following table provides a comparison of worldwide device shipments by operating system.

  • Android will increase from 48% of all worldwide traditional PC, tablet, ultramobile and mobile phones in 2013 to 53% in 2015, as shown in the comparative analysis below.  Windows-based devices will grow slightly from 333.4M in 2014 to 373.6M in 2015, holding steady at 14% share of worldwide devices in this market.
