Electronic Devices Are Becoming Less Power Hungry [Infographic]

This article is more than 9 years old.

Electronic devices are becoming less power hungry. In the space of three years, the power consumed by household electronic devices in the United States declined 12 percent, even though there were a billion more devices.

Televisions and computer monitors in particular have experienced massive gains in energy efficiency with the former dropping 15 annual terrawatt hours between 2010 and 2013 - a 23 percent reduction.

Energy consumption has also fallen for personal computers, mainly because there are less of them, along with a decline in the use of external monitors. The monitors themselves have benefitted significantly from a shift away from power sucking cathode ray tube displays.
