Chart: The Biggest Data Breaches in U.S. History

This article is more than 9 years old.

The theft of the usernames, passwords, phone numbers and physical addresses of around 145 million eBay users back in May remains one of the biggest data breaches in U.S. history. But what were the others? Over the past 10 years, there have been over 300 data breaches involving the theft of 100,000 or more records (that have been disclosed publicly).

Target made headlines in November 2013 when over 100 million records, including credit card details, were compromised. That wasn't the only bad news for the giant retail corporation - profit slumped by 50 percent as a result. The worst data breach in U.S. history happened when  Experian -owned Court Ventures sold information directly to a Vietnamese fraudster service. Involving as many as 200 million records, they then offered their own customers the chance to look up the personal information of Americans, including social security numbers and financial details.
