iPhone 6 Breaks Record With 10 Million Sold, Even Without China

This article is more than 9 years old.

Apple didn't need the world's largest smartphone market to break records this year.

The latest iPhone models broke opening weekend sales records with over 10 million new iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus sold since Friday. It was a blockbuster weekend for Apple, exceeding the 9 million iPhone 5 and 5S models sold in the same weekend last year. And Apple did it without China -- where the phones likely won't go on sale until early 2015.

The iPhone 6 and 6 Plus, the largest phones Apple has made to date, were only available in 10 regions: the US, Australia, Canada, France, Germany, Hong Kong, Japan, Puerto Rico, Singapore, and the United Kingdom. Apple says the iPhones will be available in 115 countries by the end of the year.

“Sales for iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus exceeded our expectations for the launch weekend, and we couldn’t be happier,” Apple CEO Tim Cook said in a statement. “We would like to thank all of our customers for making this our best launch ever, shattering all previous sell-through records by a large margin. While our team managed the manufacturing ramp better than ever before, we could have sold many more iPhones with greater supply and we are working hard to fill orders as quickly as possible.”

The weekend sales built on a previous new record for Apple, as the company logged over 4 million new iPhone preorders a week ago.

Reports suggest that the iPhone 6 Plus has been more difficult to acquire in early sales. It is unclear whether demand is simply higher for Apple’s first “phablet” or the company has only been able to produce limited quantities, a supply problem that has limited initial sales in the past.

Apple shares nudged up 0.20% in Monday morning trading.
