iOS 9.2.1 Sucessfully Jailbroken

Following
This article is more than 8 years old.

Despite rumors that the usual suspects  - Pangu and TaiG teams - had managed to get to grips with iOS 9.2, it turned out that our hopes for a late 2015 release for a jailbreak tool were unfounded. The statement made by 3K Assistant, was edited and many were left wondering if iOS 9.2 would be jailbroken at all.

Thankfully, it seems there is hope on the horizon. Luca Todesco, known on as @qwertyoruiop - an Italian developer has posted screenshots of the iOS 9.2.1 beta working with Cydia - the jailbreaking app and tweak store app.

The release puts to bed rumors that it was now impossible to jailbreak iOS, however, even Todesco admitted that iOS 9.2 was proving much harder to jailbreak than iOS 9.1:

As such, Todesco is correct in saying that anyone currently jailbroken on an early version of iOS 9 should not update to iOS 9.2 or 9.2.1 when it's released to get the latest features and enhancements from Apple in the hope that a new jailbreak tool is around the corner. However, this suggests that we might not just be in line for a tool for iOS 9.2.1 when it's released publically, but that one team may release an additional tool in the meantime for older firmware's too - perhaps iOS 9.1 or even iOS 9.2 using existing bugs that Apple hasn't patched.

However, Todesco also pointed out that while he had a jailbreak working on the current iOS beta - 9.2.1, he would not be releasing the tool. In fact, the final release may not even use the same exploits. That seems a little unfair, but there's a very good reason for it. There are a number of 0day exploits out there that are highly valuable and allow the jailbreaking teams to do their stuff as well as provide a basis for future jailbreaks. Releasing a tool based on one of these bugs now for iOS 9.1 users or 9.2 would be shortsighted given that iOs 9.2.1 is already in beta form.

This did cause some people to question the validity of his original post claiming a successful iOS 9.2.1 jailbreak, but he since posted a screenshot of the kernel code running iOS 9.2.1 as well.

So what exactly is the current jailbreaking status? There is no available tool for iOS 9.1 or later, but the likelihood is that one of the heavyweight teams - Pangu or TaiG will release a complete, untethered tool for iOS 9.2.1 after it goes public (it's currently in beta testing).  There's no current timescale, but when the jailbreak is released, I'll be back with a full guide on upgrading and jailbreaking.
