Facebook Improves News Feed With A 'Save' Feature

This article is more than 9 years old.

Today Facebook announced a new feature that lets you "save" items that are posted on the News Feed. You will be able to save links, news stories, video clips, music and places from the News Feed to be viewed later.  Your saved items will be kept private, unless you decide to share them. Facebook will sometimes show you reminders for the saved items if you do not look at them for a while.

To save something that you see on Facebook, click on the "Save" button in the bottom-right of a post or click the down-arrow icon at the top right of the item and select "Save":

You can save items that are from a Facebook Page by clicking on the "More" icon and selecting "Save."

When you save items on Facebook, it will appear in the "Saved" section of the mobile app and the "Saved Items" section on the left-side navigation area of Facebook.com. You will be able to view the saved items by category or click on "All" to see everything that you have saved.

After you are done with the saved item, you can archive or permanently delete it. To archive the item, click the "X" on the top-right corner of the post. To permanently delete it, click the "More" icon and select "Delete."

The items that were previously saved on your "About" page can now be found in the "Saved Items" folder, which only you can see. This may include your favorite movies, TV shows and books.

This is what the reminder feature will look like:

On the mobile version of Facebook, you will be able to archive and share posts by swiping right:

This feature will be useful for keeping Facebook users engaged and getting them to come back often. Generally people save items that they find on Facebook by bookmarking it on the web browser, opening it in a new tab, pinning it on Pinterest, storing it on Evernote or e-mailing it. Twitter already had a similar feature implemented called "Favorites" for content that users want to store and check on later. The addition of a bookmarking feature on Facebook just seems natural.

The "Saved" item feature will be rolled out over the next few days for every Facebook user on desktop and mobile platforms.

As a Facebook user, do you think this feature will be useful for you? How often do you think you would use it: every day or a few times per week? Let us know in the comments.
