Top Five Ebook Publishers Of 2014...So Far

This article is more than 9 years old.

Publishing even one best-selling ebook is a feat worth celebrating. Most publishing houses never get there.

Publishing dozens, however, is worthy of a list.

It will be no surprise to those of you who follow publishing that Penguin Random House tops the Digital Book World list of top ebook publishers in the first quarter of 2014. The company is as large by revenue as the next four largest worldwide publishing houses combined.

In the first quarter of 2014, PRH had 122 ebook best-sellers, almost twice as many as its nearest competitor (HarperCollins, with 67) and about 41% of all best-sellers over the period.

For its part, however, HarperCollins won the quarter in another, perhaps more important way: It had, by far, the most No. 1 ebook best-sellers with 10 out of the first 12 weeks of the year. Here's the top five:

1. Penguin Random House -- 122

2. HarperCollins -- 67

3. Hachette -- 42

4. Amazon Publishing -- 30

5 (tie). Simon & Schuster -- 12

5 (tie). Self-published -- 12
