The 10 Sectors Seeing The Most New Interest From Job Seekers

This article is more than 8 years old.

In light of this morning's sunny jobs report--280,000 net job gains in May 2015 and a bump in average hourly earnings--job search site Indeed.com took a look at the top 10 emerging employment sectors based on searches by job seekers.

Indeed's lead economist Tara Sinclair notes that those searches aren't just indicators of job seeker curiosity, but a signal that employer demand and potential talent may finally be becoming more congruent.

"These are primarily areas where demand for workers was far outstripping supply, in terms of interest," said Sinclair.

At the top of the list is digital marketing. Interest in the field grew between 30 and 40% over the past two  years alone in a sphere that's adding jobs that didn't exist 15 years ago, including social media strategy, email campaign management, and online behavior analysis.

In second place is healthcare administration, a field in which interest is almost 25% higher now than it was this time last year. Job seekers on the hunt for roles overseeing health systems and hospitals will want to consider a move to Dallas or Houston, where demand for their skills is greatest.

Rounding out the top three is java developer, for which searches on Indeed have grown 22% over the past two years.

It's no surprise that technology jobs dominate this ranking. But Sinclair points out that even the jobs outside the industry still have a technology focus.

"Five of [these jobs] are absolutely tech jobs," said Sinclair. "Java developer, web developer, information technology, data analyst, network engineer--these are all clearly in the tech field. But when you go beyond that, instructional designer is a lot of building online materials for courses, and digital marketing, think about how much marketing has been changed by online marketing. Finally we are seeing some of this data revolution moving into healthcare as well."

A few of these jobs fall outside the tech and healthcare spheres. Job seekers are increasingly interested in roles as athletic trainers, for which there is nationwide demand. Talent acquisition professionals also make the list, as the importance of "talent pipelines" continues to grow in the eyes of major companies.

The list provides some important takeaways for those considering training or a career change as well. While there's no foolproof prediction for which jobs will still be in high demand a few years from now, Sinclair says that for those considering pursuing a new professional skill set, healthcare and technology jobs are the safer bet.

"That’s the challenge of our economy: It’s a moving target. Trying to hit that target is challenging."
