Vanity Fair and photographer Annie Leibovitz have teamed up to bring us a bunch of new cast photos for upcoming sci-fi blockbuster, Star Wars Episode VII: The Force Awakens.
They've got a lot of interesting shots. Episode VII is the June cover story, after all, and promises some other reveals if you check it out in print.
io9, which got a look at said cover story, confirms that director J.J. Abrams is placing a premium on practical effects, including muppets, and enjoys the "preposterousness" of it all.
I can say that after watching the latest Avengers, I'm feeling a little CGI overdose, so any confirmations of practical effects and puppetry is good news to me.
In any case, one big reveal is the fact that the film's villain, Kylo Ren, is being played by Girls star Adam Driver. Here's a very, very odd picture of the new bad guy:
I'm pretty agnostic on Driver. I can see how he could be a fine Sith antagonist. But this photo is bizarre. It doesn't look real at all. And Kylo Ren is much more intimidating in his mask.
Either way, the rest of the photos over at Vanity Fair's website are pretty great. We get glimpses of many of the cast and even some space pirates, which is pretty cool. I'd just like to see a less shopped-looking Kylo Ren.
Oh, and Oscar Isaac looks pretty awesome as pilot Poe Dameron, posing next to his X-Wing:
Anyways, May the 4th be with you. Happy Star Wars Day!
