Hate Instagram's New Logo? Here's 20 Other Famous Company Emblems That Have Changed Radically

This article is more than 7 years old.

Out with the old and in with the new. Image-sharing app Instagram swapped out their vintage camera logo for a more colorful, simplistic take Wednesday.

While critics quickly trashed the redesign, it wasn’t the company’s first tweak to its logo. But it was a major one. Gone is the skeuomorphic icon that looks like a Polaroid camera. Now, the image is pared down to a few white lines depicting a view-finder and lens.

Instagram isn’t the only company that’s ditched well-established branding in favor of minimalism. While it’s certainly not always the case, a quick look at 20 famous company and brand emblems reveals a propensity towards sleeker, simpler logo redesigns.

"The Instagram logo and design was beginning to feel, well… not reflective of the community, and frankly we thought we could make it better,” Ian Spalter, Instagram's head of design, wrote in a blog post on Medium announcing the update.

While Instagram aimed for something that better captured their community, other brands have revamped logos as their products have changed over the years.

For example, Nintendo was founded as a playing card company in 1889 and over time, transitioned into the video game industry. Nintendo’s 1950s emblem includes the company’s older name, Nintendo Playing Card Co., under a spade symbol.

Other logos can make you reminisce about the not-so-distant past. Google ’s premiere 1997 logo looks like a relic from that decade with the compressed 3D font.

Since then, the basic color scheme has remained similar, but the lettering has taken on a more modern and simple look.

In the 1950s, the McDonald's logo featured Speedee, a cartoon character with a burger for a head. In the 1960s, the company drastically changed their look and adopted the iconic golden arches.

That is now one of the world's most recognizable logos -- anyone driving down a highway or cruising through a mall has seen that "M."

While older logos can evoke nostalgia, new incarnations can represent a company’s willingness to evolve, even if the emblems were met with backlash. Take a look at how these logos have changed over the years and leave your opinions in the comments section.
