'Legends Of Tomorrow' Premiere Date Announced, New Trailer Released

This article is more than 8 years old.

Legends of Tomorrow is just around the corner. The new crossover spin-off of the CW's The Flash and Arrow features characters from both those shows teaming up in an epic, time-travelling quest to save the future.

The Atom, White Canary, Firestorm, Hawkman, Hawkgirl, Captain Cold, and Heatwave make up the Legends motley crew.

And what an odd team it is.

The Flash Team

We've just seen Hawkgirl appear on The Flash, though she has yet to spread her wings. I'm curious to see how Hawkman is introduced. Poor Cisco.

The new Firestorm was also just recently established this season, when Jax came on-board to replace Ronnie Raymond. We didn't get to see much of the new twin-hero in action, but I liked Jax.

And finally, Captain Cold and Heatwave. We haven't seen a ton of Heatwave, but I have a soft spot for his counterpart, especially after we found out what a horrible monster his father was. I can't imagine they'll make great heroes, necessarily, but they should provide some much-needed firepower.

The Arrow Team

From the Arrow side of the aisle we have White Canary---the recently resurrected Sara Lance, who once again bailed on Star City and her friends and family when it turned out she wasn't entirely cured of the Lazarus Pit's blood-lust. (Though she should have stayed since Thea shortly thereafter may have found her own solution.)

I'm just happy to have Sara back. I didn't like the way she was killed in the first place and I always thought she was the more interesting (etc) of the Lance sisters.

Ray Palmer, aka The Atom, also recently returned from the dead. Or, rather, from miniaturization and a run-in with Dhark. He's been aimless, though, because he was always a better fit for The Flash!  And because money can't buy you love.

Hopefully he finds his purpose in Legends of Tomorrow.

Rip Hunter

This rag-tag band of rogues and heroes, former assassins and scientists, is assembled by a man from the future, Rip Hunter. Hunter is a Time Master and, in the comics anyways, a skilled martial artist who has learned his fighting skills from myriad epochs. (The character first appeared in 1959.)

He's come back in time to gather heroes to fight the world's greatest threat: The immortal Vandal Savage. Because with a name like that, how could you not be an evil super-villain?

Hunter's goal is to travel through time to kill Savage before he becomes the Big Bad---sort of a Looper-esque plot. All the "don't mess with time" stuff seems to play a role, which should (or could anyways) have interesting repercussions for both The Flash and Arrow.

Here's the brand new trailer:

Pretty exciting stuff. Action-packed, time-traveling, filled with great characters and an exciting villain. I'm just surprised that the CW is expanding its DC TV universe in such big ways. This show hardly looks cheap, with plenty of expensive CGI and a big cast of characters.

There's some other cool things in the trailer, like when Rip says:

"I've seen Men of Steel die and Dark Knights fall."

Sadly, that's probably the closest we'll ever get to either Superman or Batman showing up on the CW, along with a host of DC villains. The characters are being saved for the movies, which makes sense. Lately, I'm just more of a TV guy. A movie is fine, but a show you can really settle into and get to know the characters.

Legends of Tomorrow premieres on January 21st on the CW.
