Tech Women Triumph 2015: A Phenomenal Year In Review

2015 has been a year of fantastic breakthroughs for women in technology.

With Girls Who Code teaching nearly 10,000 young women so far, pioneering female NASA executives leading the way, and Randi Zuckerberg and Jennifer Hyman being among the many businesswomen mentoring the latest female tech talent, there is an enormous amount of great news to cheer the holiday season.

NASA’s Science Women Blazing A New Trail

Women are blazing a trail in space tech and science. In the latest developments, California-based scientists Jessica Creamer and Fernanda Mora have developed a quite stunning, fully automated space lab.

NASA has a long history of making the most of inventions created by women in tech. Check out our recent stories of exec Lybrease Woodard, who has been mentoring women to the very top of space science, Elizabeth Robertson, building and testing a 3D printed rocket launch engine, Teresa Vanhooser, deputy-leading phenomenal work at the Marshall center in Alabama, on space flight and propulsion, and Niki Werkheiser, who stunned the tech community by getting 3D printing into operation within space.

Girls Who Code Teaches 10,000 Young Women

Girls Who Code has hit a major milestone, teaching tech skills to nearly 10,000 young women since the organization's creation in 2012. Reshma Saujani, the Girls Who Code’s inspirational founder, tells me: “The most important tip I give the girls in our programs is that there’s nothing wrong with failing. Coding is challenging, and it doesn’t come right away to anybody. But I’ve learned in my experience that learning from your failures will make you stronger, more confident, and more resilient for whatever comes next .”

There is also a particularly great piece on girls in tech from Forbes contributor Amy Guttman. The new CODEGIRL movie, she writes, follows girls around the world developing helpful apps as part of a major competition. The World’s Richest Women In Tech

Chinese tech entrepreneur Zhou Qunfei has topped the list of the world’s richest women in technology. Qunfei, who lives in Hong Kong and founded Lens Technology – a maker of high end glass for laptops and cellphones – has a personal fortune of $7.5 billion.

Next on the list, compiled by Katia Savchuk, is Bet 365 founder Denise Coates, who has a personal fortune of $2.9 billion. Meg Whitman, chief executive of HP and former CEO of eBay, has a $2.2 billion fortune.

Developing Real Resilience

Erika Trautman, co-founder and chief executive of interactive video platform Rapt Media, shared some fantastic advice on real resilience.

Trautman has four highly effective steps for true resilience and success, and they are a must read.

Women In Tech Are Beating The Bias

Women are consistently overcoming an implied bias against them, leading to inspirational career advances, according to Aarthi Ramamurthy, a software engineer who founded San Francisco-based start-up Lumoid.

Meanwhile, Jennifer Hyman, chief executive of online and in-store designer apparel rental firm Rent The Runway, tells Forbes that women at the top of technology and other industries are “a symbol to the larger female community”, helping to draw more women into the industry. Hyman says being true to oneself is an attribute that massively empowers women leaders, according to a highly successful tech and fashion entrepreneur.

And Cathryn Posey, founder of Tech By Superwomen, explains why the tech women facing tough challenges will succeed.
