Move Over Beatles - Justin Bieber Breaks More Records To Make U.K. Chart History

This article is more than 8 years old.

When the history of pop charts is written, the Beatles and Elvis Presley will be among those with prize places. But Justin Bieber is now gaining a look-in. Bieber now has the Top 3 places in the U.K. singles list - shattering the records  they set. This is the first time an artist has ever achieved this feat in the history of the Official Charts.

The Canadian star’s army of Beliebers loves him more than ever in 2016, it seems. Even if he doesn’t make it onto so many critics’ lists, his fan base is still strong. Last year, at one point, Bieber had 17 songs listed on the U.S. Hot 100 too, beating the record of 14 tracks that was held by the Beatles for decades.

In Britain, Bieber’s “Love Yourself” is the top single for a fifth week. “Sorry” is at 2 and “What Do You Mean” at 3.

This is not to write off Presley, who has now spent 10 straight weeks in the British Top 3 albums with his orchestral If I Can Dream. There was a strong push by his fans this week to mark his birthday week – he would have been 81 today. If I Can Dream finished 3,300 sales behind Adele’s 25, which therefore has been at the top for seven straight weeks. Elvis’s success is all the more remarkable given he died in 1977 and only visited Britain fleetingly during a plane stop in 1960.

Another rock legend – who died rather more recently – has also been the subject of a social media campaign for sales. After the passing of bassist, singer and songwriter Lemmy at the age of 70, sales rose for the signature Motörhead track “Ace Of Spades.” The song is now at Number 13 in the chart just announced, and beating its placing when it first came out about 35 years ago. Lemmy’s funeral service at the Forest Lawn Memorial Cemetery, Hollywood, is due to be streamed online on Saturday, January 9.
