David Farbman On Hunting

This article is more than 10 years old.

David Farbman is commissioner of the World Hunting Association.

I was introduced to hunting at about 7 or 8 years old by my father, who was a bird hunter. I began bow hunting for deer at the age of 12, after my dad had bought a piece of property in northern Michigan. One of the local farmers in the area got me into the sport, and from the minute I picked up a bow and headed into the woods, I became a passionate hunter.

One of the things which is always a topic is, "is hunting a competition or not?" I would argue that everything in life is competition. Every day you get up to go to work, it's competition.

Hunting has continuously decreased in its number of participants. Youth are falling away from the sport. I think that is a combination of the growth of the Internet, satellite television and other sports.
