Three Simple Things Your Organization Can Do To Prepare For The Future Of Work

This article is more than 8 years old.

One of the things that I get asked a lot is "what simple steps can my organization take to prepare for the future of work." Telling organizations to basically tear down everything and rebuild from scratch isn't always a very scalable or practical thing for them to do. So, here are three simple things that organizations can do to prepare for the future of work.

  1. Listen to employees. Your employees can tell you so much! Find out what they care about, what their expectations are, what they demand, what they want to see from the workplace. Start to implement changes based on this information.
  2. Make sure you have the right people in positions of power. You may recognize this topic from a previous Future in 5 video. Many organizations take employees who are good at delegating, controlling, maintaining the status quo, and promote those employees to managers. These new managers are then trained to be empathetic, to engage and inspire others. Instead, companies should be taking the employees who have leadership qualities, those who are good engaging and inspiring others, and giving those contributors management training.
  3. Invest in the right technologies. Invest in technologies that connect all of the people in your company. When we think about the Future of Work, we know that technology is in the forefront. Technology is the central nervous system that holds a company together. It empowers the organization and allows the organization to drive forward. Employees should have access to each other, and information anywhere and anytime on any device.
