New York To Hong Kong: Cities With The Most Billionaires In 2015

Following
This article is more than 9 years old.

Christy Walton, the world's richest woman, calls the picturesque town of Jackson, Wyoming her home, but that's atypical for the world's wealthiest. More than a third of the 1,826 billionaires on Forbes' list this year live in 20 major metropolises around the world.

With 78, New York City has more billionaires than any other city in the world. From former city mayor Michael Bloomberg to media mogul Rupert Murdoch, the Big Apple has proven its attraction to the world's wealthiest yet again. But New York is not alone. Thanks the total of 541 billionaire residents in the U.S., American cities have an edge in their shares of billionaires compared to others around the world. Eleven cities, such as San Francisco, Los Angeles and Dallas, have more than 10 billionaire residents.

While major American cities remain popular homes, Asia’s wealth boom has boosted the numbers of billionaire residents in the Eastern metropolises of China, India, Hong Kong, and South Korea. The continent is now home to more than half of the top 20 most billionaire-friendly cities. With 64 billionaire residents, Asia’s financial hub Hong Kong has almost caught up with Moscow and already surpassed London. Beijing is not far behind with 45 billionaires, making it the top spot for wealth in the Middle Kingdom. India's Mumbai and South Korea's Seoul follow with 33 and 29 billionaires respectively, as both countries significantly increased their shares of billionaires this year.

Despite Asia's rise, Moscow keeps second place as it remains the hot spot in Russia, with more than 80% of the country’s 82 billionaires residing in the capital. London, Europe’s financial center, takes the fourth spot with 46 billionaires as Hong Kong has jumped ahead. If China continues to churn out a record number of new billionaires, Beijing, which right now only trails by 1 billionaire, will likely overtake London next year.

Of course, the wealth of the world’s richest expands not only in major metropolises, but also stretches to new corners around the world from Guatemala City to Chico, California. This year, the wealth almanac in our print package features top cities in all the 68 countries represented in our list.
