Ever seen a music video for a song you like and thought “I could do that!” Well, now’s your chance.
Triller, a new app that’s just hit the market, aims to make short music videos much easier to direct and edit for anybody feeling creative. Users can pick their favorite song (just a small portion of it, not the entire track), and then shoot whatever they feel works with the music. Directors are supposed to do a few takes, and then the app edits them all together to make one clip. If that sounds a bit confusing, here’s a video that pretty quickly shows the process and the final product.
Lip syncing videos have become popular on social media, as they are typically short, allow people to be a part of their favorite songs, and are usually just as much fun to watch as they are to make. There are several apps that allow people to film themselves singing along to the singles they love (such as Dubsmash, which has become one of the most-downloaded apps in this category), but what makes Triller interesting is the editing. Having several different scenes and cuts between them is what helps make this really look like a music video.
Once filmed, filters can be applied to the shots, making this something of an Instagram for music videos. The trio launching the app—developers David Leiberman, Sammy Rubin and respected music video director Colin Tilley—clearly put a lot of thought into the little things that would help Triller-made videos really stand out on social media (as people can share their creations once complete). Tilley is well-known for his colorful visuals, so it’s no surprise that Triller includes the option to add filters to any video.
Having Tilley be a part of launching Triller is a great idea, as he is one of the most respected music video directors of our time. He has worked with some of the biggest names in hip-hop and pop, including Jason Derulo (“It Girl”, “Talk Dirty”), Justin Bieber (“U Smile”), Jeremih (“Down On Me”), and perhaps most famously, Nicki Minaj, for whom he directed the viral sensation that was “Anaconda”. In a statement announcing the app, David Lieberman, one of the app’s creators, explained that Triller was fantastic because it “truly democratizes the music video creation process.” As of now, Triller is only available on iOs.
