ASCAP "I Create Music" EXPO Connects Aspiring and Established Artists

This article is more than 9 years old.

Entering its 10th year of existence, the ASCAP “I Create Music” EXPO has already proven to be monumental in helping pave the way for countless individuals in the music industry, whether it be newbies, veterans, or anyone in-between. And with their annual event coming up at the conclusion of this month in Los Angeles, they’ll be aiming to have a similar type of impact, with a vast collection of activity that’s in store for the three-day gathering. Nearly 200 panelists have been announced for the 2015 EXPO, taking place on April 30-May 2 at the Loews Hollywood Hotel in Los Angeles.

When “I Create Music” first came about in 2006, its purpose was to serve as a vehicle that could educate and connect aspiring people wanting to carve out their niche in the music business. Over the years, it has evolved into the go-to national conference dedicated to songwriting and composing, with virtually everything covered throughout the extravaganza. Living up to that title, the EXPO features innovative classes, Q&A sessions, songwriting and composing workshops, panels, one-on-one interactions, performances, and demos.

An important element that has helped solidify the “I Create Music” EXPO as such a guiding force is its ability to reel in some of the biggest names in music, who, in turn, share their critical knowledge and attempt to educate all those in attendance. Some of the big names that have appeared at “I Create Music” include Katy Perry (2013), John Mayer (2010), Jon Bon Jovi (2008), Tom Petty (2006), and Justin Timberlake (2010).

One person who was influenced and propelled in the right direction from this EXPO is the accomplished Aloe Blacc, after attending in 2010. He’ll be moderating and interview with Bill Withers, which brings Blacc full circle. Interestingly, Blacc attending the EXPO as a fan years ago to hear Withers speak, and now they’ll be on stage together for an informative discussion. The distinctly creative Withers has appeared multiple times at the ASCAP “I Create Music” EXPO and will be making this latest cameo only two weeks after being inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, preaching his main philosophy of always staying true to one’s self. Despite all the success and accolades Withers has enjoyed throughout his career, he’s also considered an inspiration because of that very mindset, having never sacrificed any of his creativity just to fit a mold. This interview is slated for the second day of the EXPO.

Further proof that you never know where the ASCAP EXPO might lead you can be illustrated by the story of an attendee from last year’s event. "I had the good fortune to meet artist-producer Mike Viola in an elevator at the EXPO,” said Noam Weinstein. “Six months later, we recorded an album produced by Mike.”

Another notable artist that will be one of the featured speakers at “I Create Music” this year is Richard Marx, who will be taking part in three presentations on the first day of the EXPO. One of those will be serving on panel titled “We Create Music”, which will aim to teach attendees about how to go about achieving one’s music goals, as well as elaborating on the potential obstacles in their path. With personal experiences detailed, it could be a helpful discussion for those planning ahead into their future and wondering about the potential challenges one may encounter while attempting to achieve their dream.

"The ASCAP EXPO offers a comprehensive road map for a successful career in music, while providing plenty of inspiration to keep musicians motivated along the way,” explained M Music & Musicians Magazine, when describing the nature of “I Create Music” and the reach it can have towards individuals seeking to advance their prospective careers.

Pop star Ingrid Michaelson is also one of the main featured speakers at this year’s EXPO, and she’ll be part of “The Way I Am: Master Session with Ingrid Michaelson in Story and Song.” Michaelson has obviously had a very unique journey to get to where she is today, starting out as an independent overachiever before reaching stardom, and this one-on-one interview can potentially provide valuable insight on how to attain that. In addition, she’ll even be performing some of her songs -- as well as some other artists -- to add to the potential entertainment value of the event.

Furthermore, Hanson will be in attendance to share their story with many years of experience under their belt living in the limelight and being well-known for nearly two decades. They’ll be part of the Lunch Roundtables series, in which attendees will meet with four different panelists in small group settings and be able to initiate personal interactions.

Hearing personal stories and seeing the affect it has had on these individuals, many of whom are already seasoned and have made it in their careers makes a difference to aspiring musicians. That sentiment is the driving force behind why the ASCAP “I Create Music” EXPO continues to grow. Their goal simply is to touch as many people in attendance and help them move forward in their journeys within the business.
