The Truth Is Still Out There In The New 'X-Files' Trailer, But Can We Handle The Truth?

This article is more than 8 years old.

I get goose-bumps when I hear the X-Files theme music. And seeing Fox Mulder and Dana Scully back in action, hearing that mysterious whistling tune, I can't help but feel excited for this next chapter of alien-hunting, government-conspiracy-riddled drama.

Admittedly, David Duchovny's years are plain on his face. The actor looks so much older than he did back when I was binge-watching the original X-Files. Gillian Anderson looks amazing, though. And maybe that's all for the best. An older, grizzlier Mulder might be just the thing. It's hard hunting for the truth when the whole world's against you.

Here's the trailer:

Is hype for the six episode reboot warranted? I can't say for sure until the season premiere lands January 24th. The X-Files was such a great show...until it wasn't. Along with Lost and a handful of other television series, it's maybe the most disappointing show I've ever watched, and I gave up completely soon after the primary actors dropped out.

And maybe the entire thing is just a big scheme to push Netflix subscriptions and revive a dead series, as Forbes' Merrill Barr suggests. That doesn't mean it won't be good, however. Or that it won't tie up some loose ends.

I guess the question is how many loose ends we want tied up at this point. The fun of the show for me was never really finding out exactly what was going on. I liked following the mystery, but I think a part of me always worried that the answers would never be as fun as the questions. And while this trailer suggests that the truth may still be out there, a part of me wants to remain comfortably in the dark.
