This article is more than 9 years old.

According to the Dui Hua Foundation, a US-based rights group, China executed 2,400 people last year, a 20 percent increase on 2012. In fact, China executes more people every year than the rest of the world combined.

Amnesty International compiles annual reports on the number of executions worldwide but China hasn't been included since 2009, due to difficulties in recording exact numbers. 638 executions were carried out in the Middle East in 2013 with Iran, Iraq and Saudi Arabia accounting for 95 percent of them.

In Iran, 369 people were executed last year. Iraq put 169 to death while Saudi Arabia executed 79. The United States comes in fifth with a grand total of 39 executions for 2013.
