IDC And Juniper Research Disagree On The 3rd Place Smartphone Vendor

Following
This article is more than 10 years old.

IDC and Juniper Research have released third quarter estimates for how many smartphones have been shipped. Not surprisingly Samsung is the market share leader with Apple in second. However, IDC has Huawei in third with 12.5 million units while Juniper has Nokia in third with 14.8 million. (Note that my family and I own Apple shares).

IDC’s results almost mirror Strategy Analytics survey

IDC estimates that 258 million smartphones were shipped in the September quarter for a growth rate of 39% year over year. While this is almost 20 million more than the previous quarter the growth rate decelerated from 52%. Samsung remained the market share leader with 81.2 million units for a 31% share and 41% growth. Apple was second with 33.8 million for a 13% share and 26% growth. Huawei, Lenovo and LG were closely bunched by shipping between 12.0 to 12.5 million units.

This was also the third quarter in a row that smartphones have out-shipped feature phones with 55% of the mobile phone market. Total feature phone shipments were 209.5 million, down 18% year over year.

Strategy Analytics had very similar results with Samsung shipping 88.4 million for a 35.2% share and up 55.4% year over year. Apple again is in second with 33.8 million and Huawei in third shipping 12.7 million. It has LG in fourth with 12 million smartphones shipped and Lenovo in fifth with 10.8 million.

I have developed a Google Doc that has smartphone data for Canalys, comScore , IDC, Gartner, Kantar and Strategy Analytics available via this link.

Juniper has Nokia in third place

Juniper estimates that smartphone shipments exceeded 250 million with Samsung accounting for 85 million for a 34% share. Apple is in second with its 33.8 million iPhones but Juniper has Nokia in third place with 8.8 million Lumia and 6 million Asha smartphones.

It estimates that LG shipped 12 million smartphones in the quarter with Huawei and ZTE shipping about a combined 25 million.

Carriers lead-times for the 5s are shrinking

The lead-times for the 5s on the 22 Apple websites that I track have remained the same since October 11 at 2 to 3 weeks except for the Gold models in Hong Kong and Singapore are showing “Currently Unavailable”.

However the lead-times at the six carriers I track (Verizon, AT&T and Sprint in the US and the U.K., Germany and Australia Vodafone websites) have shown some nice improvements over the last four days. The Silver and Space Gray models at Verizon now show same day (which now matches AT&T) and Sprint’s lead-times have dropped from 4-6 weeks to 2 weeks. Vodafone in the U.K and Australia also have shorter lead-times for these colors.

While the Gold models haven’t shown as much of a decline as the other colors its lead-times have shrunk on the Vodafone U.K. and Australia websites. I have developed a Google Doc that has all the lead-times I have been tracking and includes information for the iPhone 5 and 4S via this link.

Blue is the 5c’s favorite color with Space Gray for the 5s (for now)

An interesting tidbit is what colors of the iPhone 5c and 5s are being bought. Consumer Intelligence Research Partners (CIRP) has been monitoring color preferences and found that the Blue 5c is the most popular at 27% with the White version a close second at 25%. Yellow is the least popular at 7%.

For the 5s the Space Gray has the highest share at 43% with Silver at 30% just edging out Gold at 27%. However, since the Gold has had less supply than the Silver or Space Gray its share could edge up to the high 30% area and move into the top spot.
