Tell The Kids: 10,000 Jobs At Pharma Companies

This article is more than 10 years old.

If -- after four years at an Ivy League school, or some fine public institution – your genius offspring is lying on the couch and, when pressed, assuring you there are no good jobs to be had, pass the URL to this encouraging jobs survey along to the little ingrate:

We came across these nearly 10,000 jobs at ten major pharmaceutical companies thanks to our friend and contributing editor, Ed Silverman at Pharmalot. Ed’s take on the list is here. Ed more frequently writes about layoffs at Pharma companies, as drug rep rolls are slashed in line with expiring patents on big-selling drugs.

Genetic Engineering & Biology News perused drug company web sites for job openings and, voila, found huge hiring needs: Novartis (NVS) 2,740 openings; Roche 1,450 openings; Sanofi (SNY) 1,427 openings; Pfizer (PFE) 815; GlaxoSmithKline (GSK) 733; Johnson & Johnson (JNJ) 655; AbbVie (ABBV) 555; AstraZeneca (AZN) 544; Eli Lilly (LLY) 484; and Bristol-Myers Squibb (BMY) 368.

As you can see from these two charts, several of these companies have suffered outright sales declines due to patent expirations and the failure of company labs to develop enough new medicines.
