Over 1,200 Hackers Are Attending MHacks At University Of Michigan's Stadium This Month

This article is more than 10 years old.

Undergraduates from MIT, Caltech, Stanford, Berkeley, Georgia Tech, and dozens of other schools across the nation.  Graduate students and high school students are also attending.

"Tom Erdmann, the director of MHacks this year, has brought together a team full of A-players that transcends any single university to throw the best hackathon ever," said David Fontenot, the founder of MHacks, when I spoke to him about the event.

This is the second MHacks conference and the first one was labeled as the largest student-run hackathon.  At the last MHacks event, over 520 hackers participated.  Some of the projects that were built at the first MHacks included an app that offered real time communication between people of different languages and a wireless audio-processor for guitars.  This month's MHacks is labeled as the largest hackathon of its kind in the Nation as labeled by The White House.

"This is the kind of event that people are going to look back on in 10 years and wonder how so many big names, so many talented people were all at the same place at the same time. You're not going to find the next Mark Zuckerberg in a dorm room.  You're going to find him or her at MHacks," added Fontenot.  "This isn't just about Michigan anymore. This is about changing the way young people see the world. When you realize what you can build in a weekend, your view of the world is forever changed."

MHacks will be providing the hackers with 6 meals and travel.  The energy drinks will be flowing all weekend too.  Teams will be split into groups of four.  Some of the sponsors for the event includes Microsoft , Andreessen Horowitz, Bain Capital, Barracuda Networks, Hearst , Facebook , Groupon, Greylock Partners, Twitter, Detroit Venture Partners, Pearson, Ann Arbor Spark and GitHub.  Some of the sponsors from this past MHacks event have hired several students from the February 2013 event.
