Against a backdrop of green malachite, the first ten looks of Monique Lhuillier’s fall collection managed to make white garments interesting, perhaps even arresting. The blacked-out runway did help make solid whites pop but the true device was in the design; first a luxurious cable knit with deep grooves, and later an artistic feather-printed crepe.
Further along, white ready-to-wear transitioned into brocade and eventually art deco-influenced gowns rendered in deep greens, blacks and oxbloods. Hems were shortened on some for a modern interpretation of evening wear and shoes (also Monique Lhuillier) featured geometric cutouts in suede leather, crushed velvet and satin, according to program notes. Exceptional looks included a black lace cut out dress and long-sleeved, beaded jade gown.
