Royals World Series Tickets Are Second Most Expensive In Last Five Years

This article is more than 9 years old.

For 29 years, the Royals couldn’t win much of anything. So far this postseason, they can’t lose.  With their sweep of the Baltimore Orioles to reach the World Series, the Royals have won eight straight post-season games, a new record. For fans who want to see it live, the average price for Royals World Series tickets is $1,615 at Kauffman Stadium, according to TiqIQ. That makes it the second most expensive average secondary-market price for any team over the last five seasons.  The only team with a higher average price for their home games over that span was the 2010 San Francisco Giants--the Royals' likely opponent. At an average price of $1,701, the Giants only played two games at AT&T Park that year before winning the series on the road against the Rangers.

Like the 2014 Royals, the 2010 Giants were a team with lots of pent-up demand. Since their move from New York, the Giants had never won a World Series.  Compared to the Royals drought, the Giants hadn’t won a World Series since 1954, a stretch that included 52 years in San Francisco.  The result was two games in San Francisco that were historically expensive. The cheapest ticket to either of those games was $600 on the secondary market.  After the Giants and Royals, the third most expensive home games in a World Series over the last five years belongs to the Boston Red Sox from last year.   The most expensive of those three games was the final clinching game, which had an average price of $1,689 and a get-in price of $484. While the Red Sox had won a World Series as recently as 2007, 2014 was the first time they had a chance to clinch the winning game on Fenway sod in almost 100 years.   Like the Royals and Giants, pent-up demand played a significant role in driving up prices for Game 6.

For the Royals tickets in the 2014 World Series, prices climb as the series progresses.  The first game has an average price of $1,411 while the second game is at $1,458.  If it goes to a Game 6 or 7, the average price for those tickets are $1,699 and $1,925, respectively. If the Royals maintain their unbeaten streak, however, they won’t need to return to Kansas City for either of those games.  Royals fans who believe that streak will continue will need to hit the road to see their team clinch one of the most improbable World Series titles in recent memory. Royals fans can see the clinching Game 4 at AT&T Park for as little as $279.  If the Cardinals are able to stage a comeback and make it through, tickets are even cheaper and start at $269.  That's four times as expensive as a cheap St. Louis hotel which currently has room rates for as little as $69.

At just under four hours by car, a tank of gas, a hotel room and a ticket to the game would still be less expensive than any of the games in Kansas City.
